People's Volunteer Organization

People's Volunteer Organization
   (PVO)
An association of veterans of the Patriotic Burmese Forces who had not been mustered into the post-World War II Burma Army, established on December 1, 1945. It functioned as a paramilitary group loyal to Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League president Aung San. After his assassination in July 1947, it split into two factions, the "Yellow Band" PVO led by Bohmu Aung, which remained loyal to the government during the insurrections that erupted in 1948-1949; and the "White Band" PVO, which went underground on July 28, 1948, and allied itself with the Communist Party of Burma. The "White Band" contained a majority, about 60 percent, of PVO personnel, but many surrendered their arms during a 1958 amnesty. Old PVO leaders played a peripheral role in the prodemocracy uprising of 1988.
